Towns of Two Halves extract
“The Comedian… [was named for] Sandy Powell, who was on hand in 1970 to open the pub. Powell, born in Rotherham in 1900, belongs to the Golden Age of Comedy, when all that was required for people to collapse insensible with laughter was the utterance of a catchphrase. In his case ‘Can you hear me, mother?’ did the job all over the world and for many years.”
“Clifton Park has everything from a mini-golf course to a museum. I didn’t spend much time at the water splash, the skate park or the play area; I didn’t ride the Clifton Express land train; but the museum and café in the grand old Palladian mansion at the southern corner of the park passed the time very agreeably until kick-off.”
“A European Brown Bear called Marco… is a reject from Warwickshire County Council; he represents the bear on the Warwickshire crest, but apparently they disliked him and he came to Clifton Park instead. As part of the school loans service for almost 20 years, Marco must appear in the nightmares of a generation of Rotherham schoolchildren.”
